SHORT DESCRIPTION:

Get on the saddle and prepare to cycle into the past. You will start off at the Barockschloss (Baroque Castle) in Bruchsal at the foot of the hilly Kraichgau landscape, head through the Lußhardtwald (Lußhardt Forest) and pass the Eremitage (Hermitage) and Wallfahrtskloster (Pilgrimage Monastery) in Waghäusel and the Postmuseum (Postal Museum) in Rheinhausen, before cycling through the wetlands along the Rhine River in the Romanesque cathedral town of Speyer.

  • Starting/finishing point: Schloss Bruchsal (Bruchsal Castle)

  • How to get there: A5 Frankfurt–Basel, B35 towards Bretten/Stuttgart, B3 towards Karlsruhe

  • Public transport: Bahnhof Bruchsal (Bruchsal Train Station) (S3/S31/S32/S33) from Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Germersheim, (S9) from Mühlacker/Bretten, regional train line from Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Germersheim or Stuttgart and EC/IC trains from Munich, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Basel.

  • Parking:
    There are a number of places to park in the area surrounding the castle

Starting at the castle, head left onto the road called Am Schlossgarten after the Damianstor district – Turn right onto Asamstraße at the first opportunity – At the end of the road, turn left and head up the slope to the K3526 (Forster Straße) – Bear left – Cross straight over the railway – Cross the road at the roundabout – Follow the K3526 to the left towards Forst – Cross the road at the next roundabout – Turn onto Goethestraße and follow this road until you reach the L556 – Cross the L556 (Burgweg) – Carry on straight ahead on Barbarastraße – Take the fourth right turn onto Bernhardusstraße – Turn left onto Kolpingstraße – Cross Hambrücker Straße and go down Kronauer Allee – Go straight past the Tier- und Vogelpark (Zoo and Bird Park) and head into the Lußhardtwald (Lußhardt Forest) – Cross the K3525 – Continue down the road called Kronauer Allee – Pass the junction for Wendelinuskapelle (St. Wendelin’s Chapel) near Weiher on the left – Then bear left in the direction of Wiesental – Cross the bridge over the A5 – Carry on straight ahead until you reach the edge of the forest – Bear left in the direction of Wiesental when you come to a fork in the road – Pass the Geflügelhof (Poultry Farm) and keep right when you get to the L556 – Cross the road when you come to the little chapel and head left along Karlsruher Straße towards Wiesental town centre – Turn right onto Wagbachstraße at the church – Take the second left onto Stefanstraße – Turn right onto Kriegstraße – Cross the Wagbach Stream and turn left onto Seppl-Herberger-Ring – Follow the Wagbach Stream to Waghäusel – Once you reach the end, turn left onto Wiesentaler Straße and cycle through the residential estate – Take the second right onto Schönbornstraße – Take the second left onto Kirrlacher Straße – Turn right just before the end of the road and go through the railway underpass – Turn right onto Bischof-von-Rammung-Straße – Carry straight on to take a detour to the Eremitage (Hermitage) – Follow Bischof-von-Rammung-Straße round to the left – Go past the Wallfahrtskirche (Pilgrimage Church) and head to the L555 – Cross the L555 at the roundabout – Follow the K3537 (Waghäusler Straße) towards Oberhausen – Cross the bridge over the railway line and B36 – Take the next road on the right and head towards Lake Erlichsee – Turn left at the substation– Pass Lake Erlichsee – Turn right at the Friedhof (Graveyard) and cycle towards Rheinhausen – Follow the main road (Hauptstraße) through Rheinhausen – Cycle past the Alte Post hotel in the direction of the Rhine, towards the ferry, or turn right and follow the Rheindamm (Rhine Dam) in the direction of Altlußheim until you reach the K4151 (Rheinhäuser Straße) – Turn left onto Rheinhäuser Straße, cross the Kriegbach Stream and cycle up to the residential estate – Turn left ahead of the residential estate – Follow the cycle path – The path makes a sharp right to the K4151 towards Speyer – Bear left along the K4151 and B39 – Cycle along the K4250 as far as the Rheinbrücke (Rhine Bridge) – Head up the slope to the bridge over the Rhine –Turn right onto Geibstraße – Turn left onto Klipfelsau – Turn right and arrive at the Dom (Cathedral). On the alternative route from the Fähranlegestelle (Ferry Harbour) in Speyer, take a left through the forest until you reach Industriestraße – Turn left onto Industriestraße and follow the cycle path – Cycle past the Technik Museum (Technology Museum) on the right – Turn left onto Geibstraße – Go through the B39 underpass – Turn left onto Klipfelsau – Turn right and arrive at the Dom (Cathedral). Starting at the Dom (Cathedral), turn left onto Klipfelsau – Turn right onto Geibstraße – Go through the B39 underpass and then turn left onto the cycle path alongside the B39, crossing over the Rheinbrücke (Rhine Bridge) – Go down the slope on the right until you reach the K4250 – Cycle along on the left – Turn right onto the B39 and then cycle alongside the K4151 in the direction of Altlußheim – Make a sharp right turn before you reach the town – Take the next left – Follow the path up to the residential estate – Turn right and cycle along the residential estate as far as the K4151 (Rheinhäuser Straße) – Take a right turn and head towards Rheinhausen – Turn right onto Friedensstraße once you have passed the Kriegbach Stream – Follow the path as far as Rheinhausen – Turn left onto Hauptstraße – Go past the Alte Post hotel in the direction of Oberhausen – Turn left at the Friedhof (Graveyard) and cycle towards Lake Erlichsee – Pass by the lake – Turn right at the substation and keep going until you reach the K3537 (Waghäusler Straße) – Cross the road and head left on the cycle path alongside the K3537, across the B36 and railway line in the direction of Waghäusel – Head right to the L555 – Cross the road at the roundabout – Bear left towards Waghäusel – Follow Bischof-von-Rammung-Straße to the right, passing the Wallfahrtskirche (Pilgrimage Church) – Take a detour to the Eremitage (Hermitage) on the right – Go left and through the underpass ahead of the railway line – Once you are through the underpass, turn left onto Kirrlacher Straße – Turn right onto Schönbornstraße – At the end of the road, turn left onto Wiesentaler Straße – Take a slight right and join the cycle path at the intersection – Follow Seppl-Herberger-Ring along the Wagbach Stream until you reach Wiesental – Turn right onto Kriegstraße – Cross the Wagbach Stream – Then turn left onto Stefanstraße – Take the third right onto Wagbachstraße – Turn left onto Karlsruher Straße ahead of the church – Follow the cycle path – Cross the road – Bear right at the small chapel – When you get to the L556 (road to Hambrücken), turn left onto the road to the Geflügelhof (Poultry Farm) – Pass the Geflügelhof (Poultry Farm) and take a slight right turn into the forest – cross over the A5 to the Kronauer Allee crossing – Turn right on Kronauer Allee towards Forst – Pass the junction for Wendelinuskapelle (St. Wendelin’s Chapel) near Weiher on the right – Cross the K3525 – Go past the Tier- und Vogelpark (Zoo and Bird Park) in Forst – Cross Hambrücker Straße at the crossing – Carry on straight ahead and join Kolpingstraße – Turn right onto Bernhardusstraße – Turn left onto Barbarastraße – Cross the L556 (Burgweg) at the end of the road – Cycle straight ahead on Goethestraße and follow this road until you reach the K3526 (Bruchsaler Straße) – Cross the road at the roundabout – Follow the K3526 to the right towards Bruchsal – Cross the road at the next roundabout – Cross the bridge over the railway line – Turn right and head down the slope to Asamstraße – At the end of the road, turn left onto Am Schlossgarten and stay on that road all the way to the Damianstor district and the Schloss (Castle).
