SHORT DESCRIPTION:

This fun-filled route between Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle) in France and Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House) in Germany is suitable for all the family. It meanders through gently rolling hills and along the idyllic banks of the Sauer River between France and Germany. There are lots of points with puzzle clues along the way so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to rest and play.

STARTING POINT AND HOW TO GET THERE

Starting/finishing point: Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House) in the Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges–Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle)
At the start: You can pick up a puzzle answer sheet and a map of the route from the tills at Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House) or Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle). Your puzzle answer sheet will only be valid if it has been stamped and dated. At the end: You can hand in your completed puzzle answer sheets at the tills at either establishment. Public transport: There is a direct bus from the train station in Wissembourg to Lembach. You can get to Wissembourg on the regional train line from Haguenau, Winden, Neustadt and Landau on every Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday and bank holiday.
Parking: There are car parks at the starting and finishing point

TOURDESCRIPTION

Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle)–Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House)
As you leave the courtyard where the shop is, take a right turn and cycle down the D525 until you reach the D925. Turn right here and follow the D925 up to the German/French border and continue on the L488 in the direction of Hirschthal. Once you get to Hirschthal, follow the cycle path signage. Turn left and then cycle straight on until you come to the L488 and a small bridge. Take a left turn so that you are heading towards Schönau and stay on the L488. When you reach Schönau, turn left and then turn down the first road on the right straight away, moving onto the cycle path. Stay on the cycle path all the way to Fischbach. Once you come to the L478, turn right and head towards Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House), which is a multi-storey glass building.

Biosphärenhaus (Biosphere House)–Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle)

Cycle towards Fischbach and turn left onto the cycle path that runs alongside the Sauer River (follow the cycle path sign). Carry on straight ahead to Schönau. Once you have reached Schönau, take the first left and then turn right onto the L488. Cycle out of the town and cross the bridge when you see the next cycle path sign on the right-hand side. Stay on the cycle path all the way to Hirschthal. Take a left turn to get back to the road and then turn right onto the L488 in the direction of Lembach. You will then need to turn left onto the D525, which will take you to Burg Fleckenstein (Fleckenstein Castle).
